Nefarious - Amazon Prime

Nefarious is a suspense/thriller movie (2023) starring Sean Patrick Flanery (The Boondock Saints, Insight) and Jordan Belfi (Entourage, All American). I randomly picked this one since it was on my "Based on what you watched" list on Prime. I read the summary, and it mentioned something about a guy on death row convincing a psychiatrist he is possessed. 

Now, I am a sucker for a demon possession movie... and you want to know why? Because it COULD happen! Just like home invasion movies - that shit could happen to anyone! Needless to say, I was not disappointed. 

Basically, it is a movie that involves a battle of the minds between a death row inmate, Edward, and the psychiatrist, Dr. Martin, who is brought in to determine if Edward qualifies as being mentally fit to be executed later that night. 

The majority of the movie takes place in a large visiting room inside the prison, where we find Edward and Dr. Martin playing verbal table tennis to see who can outsmart the other one. Eventually, it is revealed that Dr. Martin is an atheist and is less than convinced that Edward is possessed by a demon. To up the ante, Edward informs Dr. Martin that he will murder three people by the end of the night. Of course, this is absurd to Dr. Martin because he would never do such a thing. My favorite scene is later when the age-old question of good versus evil and how humans came to be. Sean Patrick Flanery does an absolutely fantastic job playing Edward - he is truly impressive in this role during this particular scene. 

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. It's a good psychological thriller, even though some loose ends and questions weren't answered. But I highly recommend it if you have an hour and a half!
